test
Using the Swutits method of databending images, I took a picture of some retro arcade style buttons and put it through the program to see the results. Unlike the audacity method, they were much more vibrant and eccentric results. This is the kind of random pixelated colour I've been after...
Importing the images into After Effects to create the glitchy motion was again pretty straight forward, set them all to appear in a sequence and repeat that sequence for as long as desired. I did it using layers and positioning the time they appeared on screen using the timeline, eventually ending up with quite a few layers, but collating them in a pre-composition worked perfectly well.
Cutting into the main body of the image using a mask to create a focus area more likened to the aspect ratio of a typical arcade machine.
